The Village of Gjógv

Gjogv is a little pearl of a village at the northeastern tip of Eysturoy in Faroe Islands. Gjogv means gorge and takes its name from the unique ravine next to the village. Gjogv was one of the best open boat fishing villages in Faroe Islands for the gorge itself form a little natural harbor in and out of which the small boats could be rode. From there, the boats could be drawn up to safety at the top of the gorge where they could not be reached and smashed by the surf during storms.

Today, however, Gjogv is first and foremost one of the most popular destination for both Faroe visitors and foreign tourists. No wonder for on your way there to the west of the village, you will pass the highest mountain peaks in the country. Around the village, visitors can really enjoy the spectacular Faroe nature in all its grandeur and beauty. Gjogv offers the opportunity to go on the most exciting walks in its vicinity either with local guides or on your own. And you don’t have to go very far to experience thrilling and breath-taking destinations.

The village also has a hostel named Gjaargardur. It is not only one of the prettiest guest houses in Faroe, it is also situated in a remarkably natural setting. Here, you will find both good service and over-necessary facilities for almost any occasion. In this cozy, peaceful and captivating environment, the days are all yours. The landing place of the head of the Gjogv, which in the past was the vital gateway to the rich fishing grounds immediately west, north and east of Faroe is today sometimes used as a concert hall.

The Fantastic Island of Mykines

Mykines is one of the least accessible islands in the Faroe. The major islands are connected by bridges and underwater tunnels. But Mykines has always been at the mercy of small boats and the weather like the movement of a roller coaster. The sea sometimes runs high and during the winter half of the year, Mykines can go for weeks without any connection to the rest of the country by sea.

Mykines is no stranger to visitors detained by weather. But do not worry. Once there, you do not want to leave the island. Mykines is probably the most fantastic island in the Atlantic Ocean. It is ruled by nature. Mykines, the most westerly of the Faroe Islands is naturally away from the main land but survival was never a problem. They always have enough food. There is the fish like in the rest of the Faroe. And then, there are the birds.

It is the only island with the biggest bird in the Faroe, the garnet lives. This noble seabird builds its nest in Mykines home, an islet that is practically part of the island. Once a year, they go there by boat to catch garnets. There is also this one recognizable bird. The one you just have to love – the puffins. It has a cute face and a beautiful beak. It spends its days at charming visitors. You see it everywhere. It is like a sea of puffins.

In places that are steep, there are paths that make walking safe. The scenery is all inspiring. If you are hungry for something truly exotic, take your puffin net and go and catch a few. It takes some skill, though.

If you go to Faroe Islands, make sure you visit Mykines. But do remember to listen to weather reports and ask the people who know the waters there. If you can’t get off the island by boat, then of course, there is always the helicopter.

Hvonn Brasserie

Torshavn, the Faroe capital is perfectly situated around the small bay near the southern end of the largest of the Faroe Islands. The capital has naturally spread from the harbor area and marina which have always been the natural gateway of the town. And down here by the boat, a cozy atmosphere has sprung up with restaurants and bars.

Hvonn

One of them is Hvonn – a combined restaurant, bar and hotel. On the first floor there is the restaurant combining the sort of American and Italian brasserie. They serve quick lunches for busy city workers, meals for family get-togethers, corporate dinners and evening meals for couples. It is a busy downtown eatery with a salad bar and everything from seafood to pasta, to meat dishes and pizza.

The perfect companion to the brasserie on the first floor is the bar below. The stack case leads you down to one of the most trendy bar atmospheres in town. There is plenty of rooms during the daytime to grab a cappuccino and hang out while you wait for the bus or a ferry. But the evening is the time when things really happen here at Hvonn.  The bar is usually filled with people hanging out in the cool atmosphere enjoying the music, the drinks and each other’s company.

And when you have had enough of partying and night time tossing, you can always book a room at the Hvonn hotel. Hvonn has 43 hotel rooms; half of them overlooking the harbor while the other half overlook the time square.

Hvonn

Hvonn is a truly multi-faceted urban hotel located there at the center of Torshavn. It is a perfect base to operate from when you are staying in the Faroe Islands.

Faroe Islands Folk Music Festival in Mykines

There is a ferry to Mykines, the westernmost of the 18 islands. The boat sails daily to the island or rather when it is possible to land there which it is not always far from there. But now, we have the weather behave as it should. Today, there are some guests aboard – musicians, for there is a folk music festival in Faroe and a few concerts are planned to be out here in remote Mykines.

The door mist is lifted and the sun is beating down this summer morning. Today, it is not a problem landing all passengers, instruments and some freight. It is quite a heavy walk at the steeps steps and winding paths. The Mykines people lower the lifts so that passengers so not have to carry the heaviest luggage up on the island. As the weather is so nice today, most of the concerts will be held outdoors down by the old boat houses. Christian Black is the man who for the last 25 years has organized the folk music festivals with the help of his wife, Sharon. The chairs are taken and set up in front of the stage. But there are only 10 of them. If there is full attendance, the rest of the audience has to find something to sit on or stand up.

Later in the evening, there is a concert in the old church. The folk music festival is a small event with relatively few guests. And it has not been that widely advertised. You have to kind of find your own way out here yourself. So it is not without good reason that the folk music festival has been called the secret festival. But do not tell that to too many people because after all, there are only 10 seats.

Iceland Air

Iceland is a very magnificent island country found in Europe. Its high mountain peaks and deep blue seas are two of the reasons why it is one of the best islands in the world. It is a certified tourist spot. If you are so excited to kick your feet off from your land to Iceland, one of the fastest ways to arrive there is through airplane. Iceland Air is a member of the parent company Iceland Air Group, an airline group with main base found at Keflavik International Airport. Iceland Air Group travel and serve to and fro 32 cities in 14 different countries in the Atlantic.

Iceland Air Group

[content_box_light_blue width="75%"]

Iceland Air’s business strategy is by combining in its air flight, the passengers coming from Iceland and passengers across the Atlantic via Iceland. This strategy by iceland air is based on their geographic location, which they have wisely used and make their business a steady one.

[/content_box_light_blue]

Iceland Air has overcome all the obstacles all throughout its 40 years of existence. Iceland Air operated DC-8s on international routes until Boeing 575s replaced them during the late 90s. Iceland Air operated and traveled across America while Boeing 737s were used to travel in mid-length routes such as Europe and Iceland. However, the Boeing planes were sold just recently, except the Boeing 767-300. On the other hand, Iceland Air operates the 757s, usually the 757-200s.

As the business’ reputation increased, on 1995, Iceland Air had a total passenger count of more than one million in a year, and was given a nickname as backpacker airline, with a European hub found at Luxembourg.

But in 1999, they introduced a new aircraft livery to change the image of Iceland Air as a backpacker airline and improve to being a business travel airline, and moved their hub from Luxembourg in favor to more populous cities in Europe.

Iceland tourism is firmly standing. Though the Iceland currency, krona and its dollar exchange value got lowered and the cost of commodity increased, these did not stop tourists to visit this very special place. There have been lots of Iceland reviews on the bankruptcy and the expensiveness of the cuisines, but all of them never really regretted paying that much because they are over-satisfied with the food and the accommodation, and still wish to be back on Iceland.

Faroese Story for Halloween

Faroe Islands is a very wonderful untouched place. The sceneries are just so breath-taking and brilliant. However, despite those magnificent mountain contours, towering cliffs, green lushes of grasses and deep blue sea, a myth about the elves, trolls, ogres, hags, magic fog and ogling crags still exist.

And since Halloween is coming, this time could be a good time to talk about supernatural things in this world, especially in the marvelous island group, Faroe Islands. In Faroe Islands, Halloween is not much of a big deal to Faroese and other Europeans. But for Americans, it is. They even do have trick or treat activities and Halloween parties for that day. So, let us make this a good excuse to share some scary but true stories.

In a tunnel that connects some of the northern way villages in Faroe Island, it is so black and dark in there which you cannot even see your hand in front of your face. The tunnel is narrow and long, could be a mile long and only has one lane. When you are in the middle of the tunnel and you stick you hard forward, the size of the exit is just too tiny you can barely see it. If there is a car from other direction that wants to turn around, it has to turn into one of the turnouts. If you stand in one of the turnouts of the tunnel, you will hear a very strong gushing of the wind which could really make you cover your ears because of its loud noise. Standing alone in the middle of the very dark tunnel will just really make you feel disoriented.

The Faroese postman who drives in and out the tunnel a lots of times shared about his experiences while driving along the tunnel. He said that there could have been a car accident that happened there, and a baby or a kid was one of the victims because he seldom heard of a baby or a kid crying. And if you roll down your car windows, the sound will be clearer and louder. There have also been hearsays that a drunk was walking there and he got hit by a car that did not see him because it was dark. There was also a story that two guys driving along the tunnel saw two people crossing in front of their car. One of them even looked inside the car. That must be really creepy for them.

This tunnel was one of the first tunnels in a massive road project that started during the 1860s, yet was only completed a couple of years ago. I have heard lots of scary stories about this tunnel, some were even unimaginable. As a whole, it is believed that this tunnel is haunted.

Faroe Island Roads and Tunnels

The Faroe Islands – 18 mountain peaks located in the middle of the North Atlantic. It does not sound like an old place to have a holiday on wheels but the Faroese have taped the landscape. And today, you drive easily along, across and between several of the islands.

Up in the mountains, where in the past only the sheep run freely, wide roads crisscross the slopes, valleys and where the mountains can’t be conquered, the Faroese made the tunnels, many tunnels. Even under the seabed between islands, the Faroese have always put a high priority on road at work and the chores.

The first thing that you will notice in here as a tourist is the lush green landscape, the clean air and sea. The Faroes is a fantastic country to ride in. there are sharp curves, soft bends. There are light plains all around. The exotic Faroe is not a big place but is very varied. The mountain roads lead you through small charming villages and traffic is light. SO, it is a safe place to drive. But there are a few four-legged creatures you need to look out for.

So now, why not pack your favorite vehicle and take on to Faroe Islands as part of North Atlantic round trip.

Faroe Islands – Sheep and Wool

[features_box_light_green width="75%" + border="2px"]Only 49,000 people live in the Faroe Islands, but then not the main inhabitants of the islands. The two-legged Faroese are heavily outnumbered by a fluffy four-legged creature – – sheep.[/features_box_light_green]

They are evenly spread across the country, living off the luscious grass growing up the volcanic mountain slopes. The sheep are vital to Faroese, not so much for meat but because of the wool. Nearly all their clothes are made of sheep wool.

The sheep have two sorts of wool. The outside is the coarse, sharp over-hair.  Then, there is the soft undercoat which the Faroese pull by hand. The fluffy soft wool is knitted into underwear. And the hard hair is woven into, for instance, jackets or coat.

The Faroese coat is a woolen jacket originally woven and designed far too large and then washed and folded into the right size. The fold clutch shrinks until on the count of natural oil in the wool it becomes quite water-resistant. If you have a proper sweater inside the coat, you may be out in all sorts of weather.

It is quite well-known that these clothes are much better than synthetic, manufactured outdoor clothing. These past few years, we have experienced fast-growing interest in Faroe fashion, which in many cases starts with wool.  The wool fashion fits in with the new global trend of sustainability and ecology.  The future is not plastic fantastic. It is wool.

Faroe Islands – Seaweeds

[features_box_azure_blue width="85%" + border="2px"]

Seaweed - the most under-rated resource in the Faroes but it was not always like this. It kept the Faroese people alive during the hard times long ago. But for the last century, it has just been lying there, swaying through small rhythms of the waves.

[/features_box_azure_blue]

A Japanese man who married a Faroese woman has taken action. He wants to take seaweeds out of the ocean and put it back at the dining table. The Faroese people regard seaweed as something that forefathers ate only to survive. But Kaziwo Animoto sees it as gourmet food. he goes down to the shore from his hometown equipped with home-made tools to catch himself some seaweeds. It requires patience but it is not difficult.

Mr. Animoto is a professional. He has been interested in food all his life and knows a lot about preparations on food. He has developed his own ways of taking the seaweed home so that the original taste of the sea is preserved all the way. First of all, sunlight is important when drying the seaweed. In his small basement at home, Mr. Animoto has built a work shop where he prepares dried seaweed. This takes precision and love. He cuts tiny slices that a microwave severed all the germs die and crush. This needs accuracy. a second too much or too little can make all the difference.

Mr. Animoto always experiments and comes up with new courses. Here, he is conducting his latest experiment. The main ingredient is the traditional Faroese dried fish. It is mixed with two kinds of seaweeds, sesame seeds and a sweet soy sauce. The dish is served with a bowl if rice. This is pure seafood from the purest ocean in the world.

Bon Apetite!

The Nordic House

The Nordic House is the essence of Faroese culture in the shape of a building. It is placed in beautiful green surroundings and it is a true work of art. For the building, they made a point of acquiring the materials in all the Nordic countries - Norwegian tiles, Finnish jazz, Swedish wood, Faroese rock, Icelandic turf and Dannish steel and glass.

The house looks enchanted. The turf roof rises out of the ground with the roots which are really pipes going deep into the ground. It looks like an elfish castle of the underworld. The purpose of the house is to primarily promote Faroese art, but also to be a platform for the Nordic culture. All of the Nordic countries own their share of the house. Many foreign artists have had their work exhibited here – painters, installation artists, photographers, sculptors and designers. A lot of good music has been showcased in the big concert hall – rock shows, operas, ballet, folk, jazz and other music. There is also a smaller concert hall, as well as a cozy exhibition hall and a brand new conference room.

This house is open to the public. And most of the time, there is an exhibition or some other cultural event that makes your visit all the more interesting. When you visit the Faroe Islands, do yourself and a favor and have a look at the Nordic House’s calendar. They also have a good cafe where you can relax and enjoy the atmosphere.

Vintage Vehicles in Faroe Islands

These long, unwinding roads – they are inviting. They twist around peaks, run down into valleys and over the mountains. It is time for a drive in an old car around the Faroe Islands. And that is what these guys do. The Faroese Vintage Car Club has gone for a drive. This is a special day, a Faroese Flag Day.

[features_box_blue width="85%" + border="2px"]April 25th, that is when they have a vintage car rally in Torshavn, the capital. They are showing off the beauty of their classic models. There is nothing like an old car.[/features_box_blue]

The Faroese Vintage Car club was established on 1992 and has 170 members. They have their own club house where they meet for a good talk and sip coffee. Several clubs from abroad have visited naturally. The ferry has departures to and from Denmark every week.

So, polish up your car, take it to the Faroes and sing the country. For sure, driving distances make the road perfect for vintage vehicles where comfort does not matter; but nostalgia does.

Vestmanna Bird Cliffs

In the Faroe village of Vestmanna, you can buy tickets for an unforgettable trip to the Vestmanna Bird Cliffs. Several birds will offer to sail you to the cliff. It takes about half an hour to get there.

The bright colors of Vestmanna glide past while the real thrill awaits you ahead. On route to the cliffs, you will pass mountains and birds while the guide talks about the sea. He knows all about the bird life out here and shares his knowledge bit by bit. But the real experience comes when the boat begins to sail really close to the foot of the cliffs and into the caves.

Man is tiny here. And the sounds of mountains, sea and birds embrace you. All your senses are stimulated. This is eternity. Here, time stands still. This has looked the same for millions of years before people settled in Faroe and it still looks its ground. The boat is in and out among the rock formations. it looks dangerous, but do not worry. You are in safe, strong hands. They have sailed here thousands of times before.

If you visit in Faroe, a visit in Vestmanna Bird Cliffs is a must. The two-hour route passes quickly but the memory for the trip like this will stay with you all your life.
